About the Book
As his elderly relative lies dying, insurance salesman Mr Chase stands in the wings, waiting to inherit. Yet once in possession, he deems the manor house to be entirely impractical, a burden possessing none of the charm that so beguiled its former mistress. The inheritance, in fact, serves only one useful purpose: it should be sold for capital. But as the wheels are set in motion for the sale, an inexplicable change comes over him, and he finds himself fallling deeply – and irrevocably – in love with the very house he had once so scorned.
Originally published in a print run of only 100 copies, The Heir is a moving and beautifully told novella that draws on Sackville-West's own experiences of inheritance and loss.
